VOCALSCAPES ON WALT WHITMAN from "The Body Electric" cycle

"Vocalscapes on Walt Whitman" (2014) est une pièce acousmatique 6 pistes qui peut être diffusée lors d'un concert ou en tant qu'installation sonore. La pièce appartient au cycle "The Body Electric" pour voix, ensemble et électronique basé au "Feuilles d'Herbe" de Whitman. Le matériau sonore est basé sur les enregistrements de quinze "parleurs", de pays différents, lisant des extraits de "Feuilles d'Herbe" de Walt Whitman dans leur langue maternelle. Ces enregistrements ont été ensuite regroupés en strophes, vers et mots, un procédé inspiré des catalogues whitmaniens contenant images, scènes, voix, portraits, objets et mots. La pièce explore l'idée de la "poésie comme espace" et de la "poésie comme géographie" de langues, de voix, de performances et d'humains. Elle est aussi un témoignage de prononciations, de dialectes et d'idiomes, similaire aux mots empruntés, slang, onomatopées, prononciations présents dans la langue de Whitman. Il écrivait : "La prononciation est le résistance de la langue - elle est la langue". "Vocalscapes on Walt Whitman" a été composé et spatialisé en studio en temps réel à l'aide d'une partition virtuelle dans Max/Msp, le Spatialisateur et Antescofo. "Vocalscapes on Walt Whitman" est une commande du Ministère de la Culture pour l'ensemble Ars Nova. Elle et a été composé aux studios de la Muse en Circuit. Georgia Spiropoulos		"Vocalscapes on Walt Whitman" (2014) is a sound environment belonging to "The Body Electric" cycle; a composition for a speaking-singing female voice, ensemble & electronics based on Whitman's "Leaves of Grass". The sound material derives from the recordings of fifteen talkers, each one having recorded a Whitman's poem in her/his mother tongue in her/his place. It has been worked then in large sequences of strophes, verses, and words inspired by Whitman's detailed catalogues of images, scenes, voices, humans, objects and words. The piece explores both the idea of poetry as soundspace and as “geography” of languages, voices, performances and humans. It is a testimony of languages, pronunciations, dialects and idioms similar to Whitman’s introduction of foreign, borrowed words, slang, onomatopoeias and pronunciations inside the chosen tongue (“Pronunciation is the stamina of language, - it is language.”) The piece has been composed and spatialized automatically in sequences by a virtual score within Max/MSP, the Spatialisateur and Antescofo softwares. It has been commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture for the Ars Nova Ensemble and worked at La Muse en Circuit studios, Paris.
